Reliable ice-breaking and towing services in winter guarantee year-round and flexible shipping routes for ships travelling between the Barents Region and the rest of the world. Furthermore, of all the Bothnian Bay harbours, Kemi is closest to the Barents Region, thereby ensuring shorter land transports. The location of the Port of Kemi along favourable logistic routes is evident in the significant reduction of the total costs of transportation.
The Port of Kemi is a municipal public utility and, therefore, a part of Kemi's city consolidation. The Port provides industry and the SME sector in Northern Finland with sufficient, reliable, and up-to-date services that are cost-effective and carried out by a competent staff.
The expansion of Ajos, known as Lapland's deep-water harbour, comprises two new 178-metre quays with stern ports. Sto-ro and Sto-ro side berths. The maximum permissible loading draught is 10 metres. The new storage, operations and container handling area is 13.5 hectares.
There is also a new covered storage facility of 35,000 m² in the immediate vicinity of the quays. The total volume of the covered storage is about 60,100 m³.
The deep-water harbour is a logistics centre serving Lapland and the Barents Region. The NETSS transportation system was initiated in Ajos Harbour as of 1 July 2006. At that time, the SECU containers were taken into use in addition to the traditional overseas containers.
